Family Engagement in Preschool and Elementary School

Helping with Homework

When parents help with homework, they can promote their children’s academic success. Homework help from parents also signal to children the importance of education and strengthens parent-child bonds. However, to provide effective help, parents should create a consistent routine, maintain a warm and positive attitude, and guide children in working through problems rather than providing the answers for their children.

Weekly Tips for Families

Schedule a regular time 3-4 days a week to assist your child with homework.• Ask your child to explain how they solved a problem to deepen understanding.

When your child struggles, avoid just giving the answer. Instead, help your child work through the problem in steps.

Praise persistence and small successes to boost confidence and make learning feel rewarding.
